Cirrhosis Defined

A long-term disease of the liver in which the liver becomes covered with fiber-like tissue and has difficulty removing toxins and poisonous substances from the body. Alcohol, medications, and other substances may build up in the bloodstream and cause problems. Cirrhosis may be a result of scarring and damage from other diseases, such as biliary atresia and alcoholism.
