- Otters and waterways -the health status of otters: A new parasite Pseudamphistom um truncatum has been discovered in the gallbladder of otters from the Somerset Levels. The flukes live in the gall bladder and cause liver damage & jaundice. Since otters are non-migratory and can only be infected by eating fish, it can be deduced that fish in the area were infected. The parasite is well known in Russia & Eastern Europe where it affects otters and even humans when raw undercooked fish is eaten. In the UK it is thought to have been spread by escaped ornamental fish - the sunbleak and topmouth gudgeon - imported to Romsey, Hampshire in mid 1980's, although mammals imported from affected regions might be implicated. The sunbleak has colonised the Somerset Levels, matching the distribution of the fluke in otters.

If the breastfeeding is not going well, fixing the breastfeeding will fix the problem, whereas stopping breastfeeding even for a short time may completely undo the breastfeeding. Stopping breastfeeding is not an answer, not a solution, not a good idea. (See handout #7 Breastfeeding and Jaundice.)
